He and I went to St.Theresa
School on Deanery Road in Kingston. We were always together. At recess, we were
together. Lunch breaks, we were together. We swapped lunches. We played soccer,
cricket and "Tag, you are it!" together, and played as partners against the
other school mates. We were the best of friends, even though I almost knocked
his right eye out with a stone one day after school, causing him to wear eye
glasses for many years. Then we got separated for a couple years as I was sent
to Alpha Prep School, and he to some other school. We lost contact with each
other. Regardless, we remained friends after meeting up together again later on
at St. George's College, but our closeness was never the same. The couple years
of being apart, took away the inner core of our deep friendship somehow. A sad
thing, but in life, this happens a lot to many of us, doesn't it? Our friendship
was more strained when he left StGC and went to JC, as we saw less of each other
after he switched schools.
Over the years, I watched Warrick Lyn rise to stardom on the cricket
pitches of both schools, on their tennis courts, and especially on their soccer
fields, where as a speedy winger, he would make the opposition's defense men
cringe when he touched the ball.. Warrick will be remembered for riding his
bicycle from his home in Kingston, more than 15 miles away, to Brooks Pen, Cable
Hut or some other remote beach on the way to Yallahs. There he spent many an
entire day, lying on the beach, being burnt as black as the Ace of Spades by the
sun. Girls from different schools around Kingston would drool over this dark,
physically fit human being when seen at private parties or public events.
Warrick was, however, a quiet, humble individual, who had a funny sarcastic
laugh, that when heard, would make you wonder if he was laughing at you or what
you said. When the Beatles’ long hair syndrome came in, Warrick was one of the
first in our crowd to take on that look. It was more effective on him as his
shiny jet black hair, along with his deep bronzed, tanned physique, made him
look like one of the actors in the movie, "Hercules Unchained." I moved to
Canada in '65, and lost personal touch with him from then on, but kept tabs on
his relationship with the music business. I followed his involvement as a music
producer for many great artistes, like Boris Gardiner, Ken Parker, Toots &
the Maytals, The Melodians, Ras Michael, Sons of Negus, Zap Pow, Inner Circle
and Junior Tucker. He never seemed to be flustered by anything, and was
always calm, a trait that is absolutely necessary if one wants to be successful
in the music business, a trait I am sure his lovely wife Patsy
appreciated in him. Warrick was a great friend, a great human being, and if you
didn't know him, you missed out on knowing one of Jamaica's finest children.
Condolences to Patsy, his wife, his brothers, and the rest of his family.
Here's a little
known fact....The first testicular guard "Cup" was used in Hockey in 1874 and
the first hockey helmet was used in 1974. It took 100 years for men to realize
that the brain is also important.

Termite
riddled O’Hare May 2009 |
By now, everyone should be aware of
the fact that all the wood in the O'Hare building has literally been eaten by
termites, and that the building is currently deemed a hazardous entity that has
to be completely gutted to the outside walls, and then rebuilt on the inside
from the ground up. Old Boys Ray Chang and Carl Chang, realizing
the urgent need and limited Government resources have mobilized fundraising
teams. Carl Chang is the manager of this rebuilding project. He has spent
countless hours putting together a team of professional architects, builders,
and contractors, (all former students of StGC) to help with the refurbishing of
the O'Hare, and also build a new structure to house additional classrooms, -----
at very little cost to the school. These guys are to be congratulated for
stepping up to the plate and giving of their time and effort, in helping to
build a future for students. There has been a lot of publicity around this
project lately, and it has received a lot of support from past students, but has
also received negative comments as well. Both Ray and Carl have been using every
opportunity available to them to beg for money to cover the cost of this
enormous project. Let it be known that the Jamaican government does not have the
resources to support all the necessary projects, so someone else has to drum up
the money needed, if the life of our great institution is to continue into the
distant future. Where else is the money to come from if not from past students?
The cost to refurbish the O'Hare building is about $30 million Jamaican dollars,
or over some $400,000 Cdn. If these two guys don't do it, then who else would
want to take on this job? Instead of balking at their project, those who see
this project in a negative light should be praying for their success and wishing
them well with it. Over the past 45 years there have been 6,000 plus graduates
from the college. If every one of us donated a small amount, this amount would
more than cover the costs required for the job. And yes, it's no secret that one
person has generously donated hefty sums of money over the years, to the school,
but we can't keep drawing from this well forever. There has to be other sources
of income support for #2 North Street. The social and academic skills that were
taught to us is greatly responsible for the decent lifestyle many of us are
experiencing today, and in My View, we should all be contributing something
towards the future existence of the institution, so that others can have the

Encounters - The probability of meeting someone you know increases dramatically
when you are with someone you don't want to be seen with.
If you remember the Original
Hollywood Squares and its comics. Responses were spontaneous, clever, not
scripted and never dull. Peter Marshall was the host asking the questions:
Q. Do female frogs croak?
A. Paul Lynde: If you hold their little heads under water long enough.
Q. True or False, a pea can last as long as 5,000 years.
A. George Gobel: Boy, it sure seems that way sometimes
Q. As you grow older, do you tend to gesture more or less with your hands while
talking?
A. Rose Marie: You ask me one more growing old question Peter, and I'll give you
a gesture you'll never forget.
Q. When you pat a dog on its head, he will wag his tail. What will a goose do?
A. Paul Lynde: Make him bark?
Boy! Those shows still crack me up.
Heartiest congratulations to the StGC
4 x 200 relay team that did so well at Champs this year. The entire Track team
as well should be congratulated, as they were awarded $100,000 Ja. for being the
most improved team for 2009. This is a great sign for what's to come from them
in the future.
Some perks of
being over 60: 1) You get into heated arguments about pension plans. 2). You
sing along with elevator music. 3) You can live without sex, but not your
glasses or chocolate. 4) Your secrets are safe with friends, because they can't
remember them either.
The Summer Ball is coming in a couple
weeks. Go to the StGC website for more info on the event. Buy your tickets
early, and secure your seats in a centered position in the ball room. Those who
buy tickets a few days from the event will get seats off to the sides of the
room.
Words women use: 1) Five
Minutes: If she is getting dressed, this means a half hour. Five minutes really
means five minutes, if you have been given five minutes to watch the game before
helping around the house. 2) Fine: Women use this word when they are right, and
you need to shut up quickly. 3) Nothing: This is the calm before the storm. This
means something is going to happen to you for sure, and you should be on your
toes when you hear this word. Arguments that begin with "nothing" usually end in
"fine." 4) Don't worry about it, I've got it! Another dangerous statement,
meaning this is something a woman has told a man to do several times, but is now
doing it herself. This will later result in the man asking "What's wrong?" with
the woman responding, "Nothing!"
There are many Old Boys whose health
has deteriorated recently, and are not doing so well. Some, you know of, others,
you don't. Please take a moment after reading this article, and say a prayer for
them!!A Gannneeee!!!

St. G.C. Golf Tourney 2009 |
Looking up the word GOLF in one location on the net
indicated that the word might be an acronym for “Gentlemen Only, Ladies
Forbidden.” And in a Robin Williams skit, he said that the game is a crazy,
silly, Scottish one where a man would take a stick, try to hit a small ball down
a tiny little hole, and try to do this 9 or 10 times before being successful,
not once, but 18 times in a game. What a silly game he says.
Well, the Ontario Chapter of the St.GC Old
Boy’s Association has been having a tournament of this silly game, for quite a
few years now, and another one will be held at Lake Ridge (South)Golf &
Country Club this year, Friday 4th., September 2009at a
cost of $80 per person. The round of golf costs $46, Food afterwards at Rudy
Chin’s home $14, and $20 cash per person towards the prizes = $80. Those
