The year 1995 was a year of much reflection for me
and certainly for some of our United States based
alumni.
It was a wonderful and unique privilege to host Kingston College's Seventieth Founders' Day Service and the Centennial of Bishop Gibson's birth in the grand Cathedral of St. John the Divine. The emotional sermon by the Assistant Bishop of New York, our former Head Master and fellow alumni, Rev. E. Don Taylor; the pride and dignity of Dr. Frank "Pretty Willie" Williams, of the original 1929 incoming class, then gravely ill, in his scripture reading, make 1995 a year to be remembered for a long time.
The passing of Mr. Douglas 'Dougs' Forrest was deep and personal to many of us who were nurtured under his leadership. His wisdom, strength and humility remain as lasting legacies. Douglas Forrest, that great humanist that he was, brought us together again for his memorial service. Old boys who had not been seen since before this decade began, wept openly during Horace Banbury's emotional eulogy. The male voices that dominated the air at St. Luke's brought back shades of St. Agustine on a Thursday morning.
Unfortunately all the goals established for KCOBA in 1995 were not met. However, in several important areas this organization gained strength. Our direct financial contribution to the College increased. Our paid membership rose by fifty percent. A new spirit of cooperation and communication between the New York, Miami, Canada and Jamaica chapters was agreed upon. Indeed our respective Associations came together and successfully completed both the science labs and lawn mower projects.
The year 1995 was the year that forced us to reflect on our history, our legacy, our place in the world and the architects that made it possible. May your commitment to God, family, country and school never waiver.
FORTIS ALWAYS !!
